Allison van den Hoek
Allison is a novelist with a passion for recreating the lost stories of women artists. Her debut novel INDELICATE is based upon Michaelina Wautier, now considered ‘the greatest artistic rediscovery of the century’, and the extraordinary challenges she faced in painting The Triumph of Bacchus in 1650s Brussels. It is coming up for submission in Spring 2026.
Allison was born in Queens, New York. She soon moved to Amsterdam where she participated in Monday’s Muse writing group, studied professional photography at the Fotoacademie, and became bilingual in Dutch. In 2019, she gained a master’s degree in creative writing with distinction from St Mary’s University, London
Allison’s novel Bargaining with Grace, a psychological suspense, was longlisted for The Stylist Feminist Prize for Fiction 2021, and In the Wake of a Starry Night about Willemien van Gogh was shortlisted for the Yeovil Literary Prize 2022. She was shortlisted in 2021 and 2022, for the Bridport Flash Fiction Prize. She was Editor-in-Chief of the Girls with Pearls photography book. Her INDELICATE screenplay was a Semi-Finalist in Your Script Produced! and Big Break screenwriting contests 2025. She is a guest-post writer for Art Herstory blog. As a teenager, she loved figure-skating and ice dancing. Today, she still loves to practice some spins and steps in her London living room.
